Abstract

The iconographic cycle of St Demetrios in medieval Russian painting sometimes includes two scenes with the story of the embroidered image of this saint: a) two maidens embroidering the icon after the order of the military leader of Sarracenes who had occupied Thessaloniki; b) the saint saving the two maidens who are represented sleeping in the basilica of St. Demetrios. This story is unknown to the Greek hagiography, but occurs in Russian medieval texts. Its illustrations in Russian art seem to be appeared because of a specific interest of Russian culture to the veneration of the icons and to the visual illustration of this theme.
