Abstract

The article discusses some historical information drawn from the Vita of Hosios Luke the Stylite who lived on a column for 44 years in Chalcedon during the 10th century. With the column as the starting point the author assesses several issues; the topography of both the harbour and town, the possible earlier function of the column and its donor, and finally the extents at which the town stretched during the Early Byzantine period.
