The Virgin of Vlachernai as guarantor of justice: the seal of the sekreton with Michael VIII Palaiologos and Michael Kakos Senachereim.
Abstract
According to Michael Attaleiates and Michael Psellos, the icon of the Virgin of Blachernae was the divine pledge of justice. The icon in the hands of Michael VIII on the seal of the Sekreton established the institution of the supreme royal court, which was re-founded by the emperor, who is promoted as guarantor of justice. The inscription on the seal was compiled by Michael Kakos Senachereim, protoasekretes, teacher of rhetoric and commentator of Homer. The seal, of celebratory character, was minted on the occasion of the inauguration of the Sekreton and is dated to 1261-1262.
