The thrice brilliant divine monarchy
Abstract
In this article the author examines the subject of the depiction of three co-emperors in two miniatures each of which belongs to a different codex; the first is the 364 codex of Sinai, and the second is the Barberini Psalter. These depictions probably reflect unique historical instances from data of the 11th century. The first miniature can be dated in 1042 according to the sources. However, the second miniature is unnamed and can only be deciphered by the appropriation of the accompanying poem, which was probably composed by Michael Psellos. Thus, it is being suggested that the miniature depicts the emperor Michael VII Doukas with his mother Eudokia and her new husband Romanos IV Diogenes and can be dated to the end of 1067.
