Three scenes from the mariological cycle on part of an icon from Kimolos
Abstract
Represented on the small icon in the church of the Taxiarchs in Chora on the island of Kimolos, are three scenes from the Mariological cycle: the Annunciation to Joachim, the Annunciation to Anne, and the visitation. From the close iconographic and stylistic affinity of the episodes with a group of composite icons, of which the one in the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens (T1561) is the best known, it is deduced that the work in Kimolos was originally part of a larger icon, dated to the end of the fifteenth century.
