Abstract

The katholikon of the Asteriou Monastery (dimensions 8.20 x 6.50 m.) is of a composite four-column cross-in-square type with a dome, three semi-hexagonal apses and a narthex. The design is distinguished by its harmonious proportions. The question of the monument’s original form and of the later interventions in the narthex remains open. Until recently the katholikon was counted among the Byzantine churches of Athens. However, although it draws on Byzantine models, its construction indicates that it dates to the Post-Byzantine period and indeed to the sixteenth century.
