Terra sigillata plate with Christ standing on a basilisk
Abstract
A terra sigillata plate with stamped decoration was recovered among other findings in a rescue excavation at Palaia Phokaia near Anavyssos. The stamp depicts the Christ holding a cross, who steps on a basilisk. This iconography has been inspired by Psalm 90,13, and is most commonly found on lamps of the Early Christian period. The plate, which belongs to the class 104A and to the type Eii as established by Hayes, dates between in 530-580. The plate is an imported artifact, which showcases the level of prosperity that the inhabitants of rural Attica enjoyed.
