À propos d’un plat à offrandes inédit au Monastère Athonite de Docheiariou
Abstract
This study presents an unknown hammered offering plate made of a copper alloy (brass) from the monastery of Docheiariou, Mount Athos. Its main subject, a medallion scene of Adam and Eve, was a common and beloved theme on similar works in the early 16th century that have been attributed to German metalwork workshops, primarily those of Nuremberg. In addition, the rarity of the rendering of forms in this particular example of the theme is highlighted vis-à-vis the majority of works with the same theme, parallels in Western Europe are identified, and finally, there is an effort to interpret the innovations with respect to the theological and sociological underpinnings identified in this representation.
