The Evangelist Luke as painter of the icon of the Virgin in mainland Greece (16th -18th century
Abstract
In this article the particular diffusion of the theme of the Evangelist Luke as painter of the icon of the Virgin in mainland Greece is studied. Examples from the 16th century from the workshops of the Theban painters Georgios and Frangos Kontaris and Frangos Katelanos are presented and discussed, as well as many examples from the 17th and 18th centuries when the theme is developed in innovative ways and spreads further. This diffusion is related to the development of organized local workshops from Epirus, such as those of the painters from Linotopi and from Kapesovo and to the consequent upgrading of the status of the profession of the painter in these regions.
