Abstract

In the katholikon of the monastery of Iveron the donor panel of the late 16th century which depicts the sponsor, the Voevod and ruler of Wallachia Michnea II, his son Radu, and the abbot by that time Gabriel, also includes the portrait of the painter Mark the Iberian. Mark, as it can be presumed from the surviving parts of the decoration, must have participated in the painting decoration of the katholikon as in terms of iconography he follows the Cretan school prototypes. Such an observation would inevitably suggest an apprenticeship next to painters such as Theophanis or Tzortzis. The two-panel doors from the same monastery could also be attributed to Mark’s hand.
