Portable icons in helladic macedonia and mount athos during the 13th century
Abstract
In this article the author discusses the production of portable icons in the region of Macedoniaand Mount Athosduring the 13th century. This brief overview of nearly 40 works of art follows a chronological line from the early to the late 13th century and in certain cases reaches up to the beginning of the 14th century. These works showcase the stylistic evolution of Byzantine painting and have been dated accordingly to their affiliation with securely dated fresco decorations from the broader region ofMacedonia and Athos. Furthermore, some of the portable icons can be attributed to famous painting workshops active during the above period, i.e., the workshop of Panselinos or that of the Michael Astrapas and Eutychios, while some other icons out of this group present Western influences in their stylistic configuration.
