Rhodes. Town-planning analysis of a medieval fortified city
Abstract
In this article the author broadly discusses the subject of urban planning of the city ofRhodesduring its medieval period. The analysis of the transformation of the city attempted here is based to data from the excavations and historical information from the Hospitaller archive. However, Τhe information available concerns mainly two periods, the Early Byzantine and the Hospitaller one. Special emphasis is given to the expansion of the fortifications during the 14th and 15th centuries, to the gate-planning and to the latter’s communication with the ancient roads leading from the countryside to the city ofRhodes.
