Icon of the dormition of the Virgin in the byzantine museum of Kastoria
Abstract
In the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria an icon of rather a small size depicts the Dormition of the Virgin. The iconographic inspiration and configuration of the scene reflect prototypes of the early Palaiologan art, as it can be observed in the chapel of St. Euthymios at the church of Saint Demetrios in Thessaloniki. Furthermore, the affinities in iconography and style with the mural paintings of two of the churches of Kastoria, St. Nicholas of Kyritzes and St. George touVounou, ascribes the icon in the works of the same workshop of the last church and offers a dating for the latter between 1365-1385.
