A la latina. Icon painters with a western orientation
Abstract
The term «in forma a la latina» found in 15th-century archival sources is examined in relation to the interest of contemporary Cretan painters in older Italian art. The diffusion of eastern icons to the West and extensive icon trading intensified the reference to earlier models since it conformed with the desired style of devotional images.
