The church of the transfiguration of in the village of Christianoi in Triphyllia, 12 km. from Philiatra in Messenia, collapsed on 27 August 1886, after an earthquake and was restored by E. Stikas in the years 1937-1955. In 1999 its history was re-examined, the new plans and research demonstrating that the church was elaborated in at least four Byzantine phases, the most important being in 1075 and the latest in the late twelfth century. The so-called ‘episkopeion’ (bishop’s residence) was possibly added in the thirteenth century.
