Abstract

Wall-paintings dated to the thirteenth century survive in two caves-hermitages on Mount Oita in Phthiotis. These works are important because of the lack of mural painting in the region. Preserved in Ai-Spilies in the village of Mexiates is a representation of the enthroned Virgin and Child flanked by the two Archangels, with interesting iconographic details. In Grammenes Spilies in the village of Kombotades there is a representation of the Deesis, with the typical three-figure scheme, rendered in a linear, conservative style encountered in provincial monuments of Mainland Greece of the thirteenth century.
