Evidence on the building history of the holy monastery of the Great Lavra on Mount Athos the gateway in the circuit wall
Abstract
In this article the author discusses the building complex of the gateway and propylon of the circuit-wall at the Great Monastery of Lavra on Mount Athos. The entrance and its towers have a rather complicated building history from which we can distinguish at least three major building phases. The byzantine phase which should include the curtain wall of the west tower and the inside gate probably built by the middle of the 10th century and the tower of Tzimiskes added in the 11th century. The post-Byzantine phase which should include the 16th century Koimesis tower and the outer gate and the 17th century upper part of the west wall and outer rampart. And the pre-modern period which includes the entrance’s propylon built in 1861 and the 1887 ambulatory arrangements under the Koimesis tower.
