The church of St Irene (Rinaki) in Plaka
Abstract
StIreneisasmallsingle-navechurch in Navarchou Nikodimou St, Athens. It measures 6 x 6 m. including the semicircular sanctuary apse, covered today by a pitched roof. On the north and south wall are arches supported by marble spolia of the seventh-eighth century. In the interior of the church traces of Middle Byzantine wall-paintings were found. The original phase of the church can be dated to the tenth-eleventh century and was a three-aisled timber-roofed basilica. The next phase is dated to the period of the Ottoman rule. In the nineteenth century the church acquired its present shape.
