Abstract

The two bilateral icons of the Pantokrator monastery on Mount Athos are revisited here. The icons, which were recently published in the catalogue Treasures of Mount Athosi, were dated between the years 1360-1380 and in the last quarter of the 14th century respectively. However, their technical features and stylistic traits lead to the conclusion that both icons are contemporary works that were created with the same liturgical purpose. If these observations are correct, then the two icons must have been part of a larger composition destined to decorate the templon of the Pantokrator monastery. Hence, the icon with Christ and saint Athanasios the Athonite, and the icon with the bust of St. John the Baptist and the standing figures of the Virgin and St. John pointing both his head on a plate should have been the two despotic icons of the Pantokrator monastery templon. Such a hypothesis would rise then their dating to the foundation of the monastery between the years 1358-1363.
