The church of Panagia Hiliadou in Euboea
Abstract
The church of the Dormition Ηiliadou is small, 9×9 and height 7.30 m, and is located in central Euboea. It is a unicum resulting from successive interventions, a rather three-aisled basilica with a blind dome, referred to as transverse-vaulted by scholars. On the roof there are crypts closed with a light-weight wall. During the restoration the old plaster was removed, and it was discovered that the church was constructed in two phases. The dating of the two phases is difficult in the absence of external information. The original church was cross-in-square, with two pillars and two walls of the so called “transitional” type and can generally be dated to the mid-11th century, built with cloisonné masonry. The church collapsed, probably after a natural disaster or long abandonment. A new one was built using the materials of the first phase most likely during the Ottoman era.
