An unnoticed menologion with historiated initials: codex Leimonos 56
Abstract
45 illustrated codices of the menologion of Symeon Metaphrastes were known until now. In one group of eight manuscripts the decoration only consists of historiated initials. Codex 56 of Leimonos Monastery on Lesvos, which contains the lives of October, is only decorated with head pieces and historiated initials and should beaded to this group. Comments are made about many of the initial letters, whose originality is distinctive.
