The wall paintings in the chapel of St. John the Theologian in the kelli of St. Procopios, Mount Athos
Abstract
The Kelli of St. Procopius on Mount Athos has a chapel dedicated to St. John the Theologian. On the west wall of the chapel survives the earliest painted decoration layer, which was probably part of a greater programme. Only two scenes have survived, the Annunciation and the Crucifixion. The full standing portraits of saints include the two military saints, Sts George and Procopius, the monastic saint Barlaam and the prophet Moses. The iconographic and stylistic analysis of the paintings shows their affinities with the later Palaiologan art as well as with the Cretan painting. This affinity offers a relative chronological frame close to the second quarter of the 15th century.
